[kwlug-announce] Meeting Monday, 7pm: Incident Response, LibreTime (May 2026)

So you are outside admiring the May Flowers when your pager buzzes. Oh
no! There has been a security incident. Your toaster is mining
cryptocurrency! Somebody is exfiltrating Linux ISOs from your media
server! Your Home Assistant has gone rogue and refuses to open the
pod bay doors! What can you do? How do you start responding to what
has happened? You need a plan, and Thomas Busch is here to get you
started. In this month's first presentation, he will go through the
stages of grief^h NIST incident response, and talk about some
open-source tools like Wazuh, Volatility and Suricata can help you
handle security incidents. 

After a tough day dealing with security incidents, why not gather
around the wireless radio set and listen to a soothing presentation on
LibreTime, radio management software that CKMS 102.7 Radio Waterloo
uses to manage its station. Bob Jonkman will tell us the different
free software components he uses to run the station, and if all goes
well his presentation will be simulcast across the airwaves so
unsuspecting listeners across the region can tune into the KWLUG
meeting too. 

These presentations begin at 7pm, after meeting announcements. 

We will be having a dinner meetup on Wednesday, May 20, at Bobby
O'Brien's in Kitchener. Although details have not been finalized yet,
it looks like this restaurant meetup may also serve as an official

This is a bit afield, but if you are near Vancouver, British Columbia
(or are interested in making a trip out there), KWLUG member Denver
Gingrich is organizing a conference on behalf of the Software Freedom
Conservancy called FOSSY: https://2026.fossy.ca/ . The conference will
be held From Aug 6 to Aug 9, and they have a Call for Papers that
closes on May 22. 

Other than a mandatory off-topic plug for the Jane's Walks happening
this weekend (https://janeswalkwr.com/) that's all I got. Monday's
meeting will be held both online at
https://webconference.kwlug.org/room/kwlug and in-person at DC 1568 at
the University of Waterloo. All are welcome.
