[kwlug-disc] what is the probable cause of mail downloading being painfully slow?

  on occasion (like now), when i do a fetchmail from my provider, it
takes *forever* to get the mail as fetchmail will start to download a
message, wait for upwards of a minute, finally download it, then start
on the next one, another horrendously long wait, get it, etc. etc.

  the occasional times this has happened before, it *seems* to have
been a DNS problem, in that, somewhere, a name resolution is being
attempted, it fails, times out, and finally downloads the message,
then starts all over again with the next message.

  any suggestions?  is there a more likely issue?
