[kwlug-disc] why would you do "apt-get dist-upgrade" regularly?

You don't need to run anything regularly, unless there are packages
that need upgrading.
There are 2 ways to do that:
1. Subscribe to your distro's security mailing list, and only run an
aptitude safe-upgrade when there are updates.
2. Install apticron and configure it to email you daily. It will run
aptitude
update for you, and the email will tell you the updated packages that you
need to upgrade.
Then, it is just a matter of:
aptitude safe-upgrade
If safe-upgrade says that some packages that are held back, you can
try full-upgrade then.
