I've found ubuntu pretty good at detecting hardware out-of-the-box. I also googled "ubuntu broadcom bcm4318" and found some stuff on the ubuntu forums (mostly older releases) but with some 2008 comments re 8.04 that it works http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=285809&page=23.

Subject: [kwlug-disc] ubuntu 9.04 and broadcom wireless -- out of the box?
in a day or two, i'm going to install ubuntu 9.04 on one of my
gateway laptops which has a broadcom BCM4318 wireless chip. will that
work out of the box and detect and connect to visible wireless
networks, or will i have to manually download and install the
appropriate broadcom firmware as i do with fedora? thanks.
