Maybe a better approach is to do what MS is doing in Windows 7: Run XP
as VM.

Once you marry XP/Vista/Win7 to the application, you have a portable
setup that can run on any OS given a reasonable virtualization
environment.  Virtualbox  and VMware already do USB passthrough and 3D
video acceleration and most everything else you can ask for.  I'd say
all the potential hangups are already solved by the virtualization people.
