Darcy's right, you basically have to go with satellite if you want it to
work all the way into South America (for US coast only go with 3G).
There are three major sat providers:
- Globalstar
- Iridium
- Inmarsat
The costs range from a standard cellphone plan to a few thousand dollars
per month, depending on what you want. The fastest data rate you'll get
without paying crazy rates is 9600 baud, though. I hear Iridium's new
Open Port service gets 128 KBps for not *too* much.
If they're staying near the coast, I think Globalstar provides the best
coverage for the cost. But don't take my word for it... go hunting for
resellers.
Another option, if you're a HAM person, is there are some nodes that
provide data services. Not really sure how that works, though.
I'd be very interested to find out how they eventually do it, and how it
worked out for them.
Cheers,
Eric
