Any reason why not do it in Apache's vhosts or .htaccess?
Example in vhosts would be:
<VirtualHost *>
ServerName www.example.com
RedirectPermanent / http://example.com/
</VirtualHost>
<VirtualHost *>
ServerName mail.example.com
RedirectPermanent / http://mail.google.com/a/example.com
</VirtualHost>
