It turns out that the problem was not workgroup vs domain, but that
DOS lanman requires insecure Lanman hashes, which are wisely turned off by
default in Ubuntu (and Debian?).

It is a good thing that nobody ever needs to connect to Windows shares
from DOS anymore, in the year 2010.
