Actually that is not an Android issue, it is a Google and carrier issue.
Rooting the Nexus one is easy and you free it to do whatever you want, but... It breaks the warranty.
I know that that is as stupid, as saying that your computer will loose it's warranty if you install another OS. But that's the way it is until someone challenges that.
