Yes, 1% on the desktop is about what I have been hearing for a year or so.
But I have been seeing less that that in non tech sites.
Here is statistics from a few sites for the last 30 days or so, via Google
Analytics.
A. A large site that gets 58 million page views a month. This is a not tech
site (likely to see Linux overrepresented on those), and not a design site
(where Mac will be overrepresented).
1. Windows: 88.99%
2. Macintosh: 6.67%
3. Playstation 3: 3.03%
4. Linux: 0.55%
5. Nintendo Wii: 0.50%
6. iPod: 0.12%
7. iPhone: 0.05%
8. (not set): 0.04%
9. Android: 0.02%
10. SymbianOS: 0.02%
You can see that Linux is only 0.55% of the total, right up there with the
Wii ...
Even the PS3 has more share, but it is perhaps due to the demographic for
this site (teens, youth).
B. Another site with a very similar demographic, 40 million page views a
month, but far less visits shows this:
1. Windows: 89.55%
2. Macintosh: 6.65%
3. Linux: 0.75%
4. iPod: 0.67%
5. Playstation 3: 0.50%
6. iPhone: 0.47%
7. Nintendo Wii: 0.43%
8. Danger Hiptop: 0.35%
9. (not set): 0.33%
10. Android: 0.09%
Linux is still below 1% at 0.75%.
C. Another site that is non tech, mostly university students and
professionals in one certain industry, with 2.1 million page views a month
shows this:
1. Windows: 76.49%
2. Macintosh: 20.73%
3. iPhone: 1.43%
4. Linux: 0.52%
5. (not set): 0.24%
6. iPod: 0.18%
7. BlackBerry: 0.17%
8. Android: 0.16%
9. Danger Hiptop: 0.05%
10. SymbianOS: 0.02%
D. Compare that to how a tech oriented site looks like (in this case, it is
http://2bits.com) which has lots of articles on Drupal, Linux, ...etc.
1. Windows: 61.58%
2. Linux: 20.26%
3. Macintosh: 17.61%
4. iPhone: 0.18%
5. (not set): 0.17%
6. FreeBSD: 0.07%
7. SunOS: 0.04%
8. Android: 0.03%
9. iPod: 0.02%
10. Playstation 3: 0.01%
