Deep would be better, and simply moving the speaker should allow us to turn it up louder. It also sounded like the reverb was on last night.

I agree that we need to go deep rather than wide. I've already 
mentioned this to several others, FWIW.

I disagree that we can shelve other options - I cannot hear. The HVAC 
is too loud. Mind you - I was at the side because I wanted a table for 
the laptop. Perhaps going deep will help address that and keep us more 
central. But I can't tolerate the background noise. Part of the 
problem is people's unfamiliarity with microphones (myself included), 
a problem I don't think will go away. We need to be in a room where an 
audio system is not needed. (I must sadly conclude, but most certainly 
wouldn't have said / known so up front.)
