[kwlug-disc] What's the best desktop distribution?

All regular users want is a system that is easily installed, easy to use, works as promised, is reliable and can be maintained automatically with minimal user input. Other users generally have other careers and concerns and couldn't care less how or why the software works.
The biggest reason for MSs troubles, especially with its latest releases, are the results of sloppy implementation of bad design strategies accepted years ago. Simply put, the superstructure is beginning to collapse because it never had a solid foundation.
Luckily, Linux is Linux and as long as adequate attention is paid to the underlying structures, the rest, how it is implemented, will shine through. I believe that which distro ultimately doesn't amount to a sand castle against a tsunami. The biggest strength of Linux is not how it is modified or updated but the fact that nobody owns it and therefore nobody can stifle the input of creativity or impede its growth. As such it will, because it must, continue to evolve and by so doing will get stronger.
Best distro means nothing; we have the best *system*.

The fact that the current solutions do not cover all cases or all applications do not diminish their comparative value.
This branching thread started with the "killer application" statement.
I don't consider updating software a "killer application" as regular users do not care if their software is up to date as long as it does not break.
