I don't have their smaller rocketstick, but rather the older one (with the
external antenna port) -- works fine with umtsmon on linux, as does the newer
rocketsticks. They just show up as serial ports.
A trick I found (at least with mine) is that becuase it shows up as a USB
storage device (for the driver), I had to "eject" the storage device using the
eject command before the serial port would show up.

I tether with my iphone via bluetooth without issue. BB should not be any
different.
Be careful with your definition of "grumpy" -- If you don't have a tethering
package you will have to hack the APN that the BB uses when tethering or you
could get no connection at best, or a big bill at worst.
