911 service has changed to e911 because of all the mobile phones out there.
I'm not sure if e911 only applies to mobiles. The same issue is with VoIP.
The only time its an issue is if you can't relay your location to the
operator.
Whe I moved to voip 911 was an issue and I justified my lack of concern by
recalling that I've never needed to dial 911. Not everyone has the same
attitude as I. Still a provider like Rogers will offer 911 service.
I've heard providers will shape voip bandwidth. With rogers they are pseudo
voip. The voip phones uses a seperate channel than your internet. They
probably trunk it differently at their head end.
I used Unlimitel voip over rogers years ago and found that after school the
audio quality would noticably drop. I don't think this applies to rogers
phone.
You may want to consider putting a ups on you modem and phonw if needed.
That said I bet there are many who use powered phones at home exclusively
and don't consider this an issue.

Thank you for your prompt response. I will definitely talk with the Roger's
sales people, however, I was looking for an unbiased review from some
possible users at present. I really don't feel comfortable going with a
solution that on the surface appears to be the same, but cheaper. I've
always found cheaper does not mean better. So that is why I put the question
to the group.

I think most of those questions would be better off addressed to Rogers. I
can't imagine 911 access being a problem. IANAL, but I'm sure there must be
some laws on 911 access. Most phones are powered through the phone lines
themselves (hence you don't have to plug them in to mains power).
As far as Rogers being trustworthy, I pretty much think they're satan. If
you're under any contract with them, read it VERY carefully. I'm not sure
how they are with home phones, but their mobile service is cutthroat, and
their cable internet only marginally better (they claim to let you see your
bandwidth usage at any time, then the site that lets you do so goes down for
days).
but as for your concerns on VOIP and 911 service, I'd ask them, and if you
don't get a satisfactory answer, ask to speak to someone on the technical
side of things. Sales Staff are like drones, and they'll just tell you
whatever you want to hear.
