I agree that javascript can be used tastefully, but some sites go
overboard (i.e. I can't see any of the content till enabling js from 20
different domains, or forms that don't submit, then wipe themselves
clean when I enable JS).
They should add a "rationale" parameter to link tags so you can get an
explanation as to why the js is needed.
I think most JS on the web is sheer wankery. If we need to be able to
refresh content on a page without refresh, it would be something to
think of for future standards. The javascript is just waiting for a
state change, and after a given timeout it queries a script and displays
the results. I'm sure that's a generic enough feature to include in
standards... I'm just wary of unilaterally allowing all JS on a page to
run. It slows down the browsing experience as well, which is frustrating
when the js is purely cosmetic.
But then you can't stop people from wanting to push the limits of what
is capable, so I refer to my idea for a "rationale='explanation'" idea.
