1. They want to see what is wrong with your drive, so it must arrive
intact.
2. What happens to your data when they receive your drive:

Not sure if they refurbish your drive.. (probably not, if it's an
EIDE drive)... however that's just my speculation.
Interestingly they have a customer loyalty program (which might
turn out to be easier in the end):

I did send them an email as well, just out of curiosity. I have a
friend who used to have an electric magnetic device (one you plug-in)
and I wondered if I did try to degauss it, would they accept it as
undamaged/original.
