What does an SMS Gateway do? Like what would it be used for?

I read an article in linux journal recently about using sms to alert you of issues in your infrastructure. And all I could think is what's the point. I've been having my systems email me for years. And even if I didn't have a blackberry I could always have the script email my sms address.. you know the 555555555 at msg.telus.something.com

Or are you looking for the reverse where you can sms posts to your website? 

I'm curious to know what you use it for.

There's a lot of raving about Twilio http://www.twilio.com/sms/ , for some 
reason I also have in my bookmarks http://www.clickatell.com/ 

I don't have experience with any although I'll be trying out Twilio as soon as I 

can (free to try btw).
