If you can afford $10 a month, then why not let someone else worry about
the hosting, upgrades, ...etc.

Not sure about the payroll part though.

If you want something to host yourself, there is
http://frontaccounting.com/which gets good review. You can search
Google for a Canadian ledger. I
tried, but it really needs an accountant to set it up. It is free to
download and use. They also offer hosted versions for a fee.

Another option is Ledger SMB http://www.ledgersmb.org/, which is a fork of
another well known accounting package (SQL Ledger). My brother has been
using the latter for over a decade for his business. You download it and run
it yourself.
