Just to throw a little gasoline on the fire:

So far I'm lovin' it.

I'm also finding the Unity interface just gets in the way of doing things.
It
makes me a lot less productive, esp. when I can't remember the exact name
of the "thing" I want to launch to get something done.. Plus the unity bar
or interface just won't go to my main screen... and half the time it doesn't
even turn on my external monitor.

I have done in-place upgrades on Ubuntu and those haven't always gone
so smoothly..... so rolling updates sounds okay with me.
