I am in the KDE camp, and have been using Kubuntu for many years as my
desktop.

Kubuntu suffered for a couple of releases when KDE 4 was introduced after
3.5, and Gnome seems to be in this stage now.

One thing I learned the hard way is "stay with LTS releases only" when
your main machine is concerned. If you want to experiment, do it on a
test machine or a VM. You will have a much saner experience that way.
