What if you uncheck the 'watch my library for new files' box in Rhythmbox' preferences? I don't see Rhythmbox doing any scanning on my computer, unless I tell it to - though I don't have even close to 25k songs so perhaps I am just not noticing it.

Nope, it's totally different software. It just shares many of the
same design goals. It does have a small collection of its own
plugins, though.
