The free VoIP thing was all over their forums when first introduced, for 
the same reasons as you note. Apparently it's only for new customers, 
and they've had to beat the mob back to stick to it.

Perhaps you just ran into some fatigue on the matter.

i.e. It's service switching that matters, not just new customer at all?

FWIW, I've always thought it would be a bad idea. If part of the point 
of vendor selection is to be vendor independent, getting VoIP with your 
carrier, then maybe having to move, seems counter-intuitive - if there 
are other choices available.

If you're interested, you can all but do voip.ms for free. You can do 
everything but make calls without paying anything, and since voip to 
voip is free, after you make an initial US$25 deposit, you may never 
actually use any of it. By using a free registrar, such as sip2sip, 
you'll also be able to make voip to voip calls / test things out, as 
well. Before spending the $25.

You're probably going to want an ATA one way or another - and with an 
ATA, some port forwards, and dynamic dns, people can call you for free 
anyways. e.g. sip:adam at glauser.com. Outgoing to voip would be free, 
already, too. (Just not to real phone numbers until the $25.)

Having the ATA beforehand is a good way to get your feet wet, too.

Even simply forwarding voip.ms to your local line, or using its DISA for 
long distance (from home or cell) may have benefits, let alone softphone 
use when travelling.

Khalid was looking into USB dongle VoIP thingies not long ago - perhaps 
they have a role in your calling, too.
