Silly response perhaps, but does aptitude update show any different behavior 
than apt-*?

I am not sure of the specific issue here. Often I use the interactive
mode of aptitude to investigate what packages appear to be available
and which are not -- it may be the case that "linux-generic" does not
have a version 3.2.0.36.46 available (only 3.2.0.36.43).

What version of linux-generic is installed? What version is it trying
to upgrade itself to?

Another "try to fix things" command that sometimes comes in handy is

dpkg --configure --pending

but that deals with post-installation issues, not so much
dependencies. I doubt it will help here.
