[kwlug-disc] 8-port GB home switches?

Been on UPS throughout - nothing like the internal network suddenly 
going down due to a micro-second power glitch. And multi-second/minute 
reconnect to ISP, re-DHCP, and the like. Heat shouldn't be a problem, 
but probably is. Sitting high on a shelf with nothing much around it.

Ability to dissipate heat may be, though. Thus question about Green, 
Home, Metal, other marketing monikers.

I take the point on 1U though - wider, more air / space to dissipate 
heat, probably has a fan, metal case.

Note power conditioning noted, not UPS. Not near the same thing.

It's unlikely your UPS has it, they don't exactly sit on a book case or 
mount on a wall. Even if real UPS, even APC "Smart" UPS', ain't. Think 
Tripp-Lite, more often.

You won't be getting (much) better power, just continuous.

I sort of dislike power conditioning claims: There's seldom quantifiable 
evidence as to the gain vs. the expense, too many factors. At least for 
home - I get power conditioning, pure-sine on a central, server 
room-supplying UPS. e.g. Will I get 5 more from the server? Is that 5 
seconds, minutes, months, hours? No way to know.

Sounds like, yes, consider the home switch disposable. It goes, go get 
another one.

Depends upon how much one thinks their time is worth, I suppose - the 
time here being detection, diagnosis, run to store, get home, unplug / 
re-plug.
