Just use puppet, not puppet enterprise...

Chef is another possibility, ansible has it’s purpose too.. There’s also salt as an alternative...

Depends what you’re trying to do?

I’ve run 1000+ machines with puppet in both standalone and puppet (multi)master configurations, really depends on your environment and what you want to use puppet for..

Yeah no I'm trying to avoid the 100$ per machine thing.  That's absurd.  If I have to run 30 machines thats 3000$ a year just for me to run my own machine.  I need a bit more scalability without having to engineer my own webgui.  Is there any 100% opensource versions of anything like this?
