I've been attending the BSDCan conference for years, and the FOSSLC
group (http://www.fosslc.org) has handled recording for us for the
last several.
They're using a USB VGA capture device - I think it's this one:
http://www.epiphan.com/products/frame-grabbers/vga2usb/ Unfortunately
they don't have open source drivers, but do have binary Linux drivers
which I think just present a v4l device.
The device works well and the output quality is good, but an active
VGA splitter should be used to tee the signal to it. At BSDCan they
used a passive Y-cable which "works" but makes the projector output
rather dark.
