[kwlug-disc] Speed testing your internet connection ...

So, with all the talk about cutting the cord, and such ... here are some
ammo for wasting some more time ...

Testing the speed of your connection can be done in several ways.

http://SpeedTest.net is a web site that runs a Flash application in your
browser. You select the host to test to, and get some results.

I found lots of variance. For example, testing on WiFi is slowed than when
you are on a wired Ethernet connection via the LAN to the same WAN
connection.

Testing to servers in Kitchener or Waterloo is always slower than some
servers in Toronto (including some run by Teksavvy and VMedia, among
others). I got some results that are faster than my nominal connection on
download (e.g. 49Mbps on a 35Mbps down connection).

They also have an Android app.

http://testmy.net frowns on testing via a Flash app, and does its tests
differently. They always report lower results than SpeedTest, but these are
not to the same hosts, so understandable.

You can also download a file from a server that you manage somewhere, via
wget, and measure that.

Also, time of day varies for cable connections, as well as what others are
doing on your connection.

Dont' blame me for the time wasted ...
