If you only need the year, month and day (as opposed to hour and
minute), then the form
`date --iso`
instead of
`date +%Y%m%d.%H%M`
is easier to type. I use this all the time.
(Mind you, I do not know *why* this works; the --iso option does not
appear on the date(1) manpage in Debian.)
