Fair enough, but I though part of the purpose of ground was to 'get a 
better zero', and, for all I knew, divert some of the signal excess that 
way rather than down the line.

Excess being a poor word choice. Extraneous harmonics? Or something.

In the end, a less 'dirty' signal?
