SU is back. Was it a secret?

When I started with Linux/Ubuntu a scant 5 or 6 years ago I missed 
having SU around.*
Just the other day, I discovered SU is back, in Ubuntu 12.04 (maybe 
earlier but I had not looked).

SU, brought unto play with $ sudo su<ENTER>, really helps with 
configuration work.

* I remember SU and SU's parent UNIX and the cousin XENIX from the old days.
