I do wonder if the MS Office call is still true any more, or gone to
urban legend. Certainly it would be my assumption, but I now question my
assumption.

I don't doubt about VS, but I do wonder it as percentage of the total.
If you extrapolate the premise, then MS is, or is becoming, more of a
server platform, and thus need for development tools - yet (perhaps also
urban legend, in the sense of how many may still be out there) less and
less of the server world is running Win Server {anything}.

I wonder if there is an AWS vm OS count out there.

Perhaps this is (more?) if a company determines there is a viable app /
platform they wish to build for, such as Windows phone or 8, inherently
that will drive a need for the proprietary server / development tools
platform necessary to deliver / develop that product.

Let alone, if the company can't figure out how to monetize an Android /
FOSS platform to maintain a financially viable company, they have no
choice but Windows (or Mac? Also diminishing?) - thus above need for
servers and development tools. (And number of such companies also
diminishing?)
