The drive has already failed. It can't boot Windows, nor can I mount
it as NTFS as Linux to just do a directory list.
So this is a "salvage what you can" situation.

Hmmm ..
Would the fact that the drive already has lots of bad sectors change
your recommendation above?
FYI, the command I am using: ddrescue -d -n -r3 -vv /dev/sdc2
/data/ddrescue-20141015.img /data/ddrescue-20141015.log
has been running overnight and has copied 28GB out of 446GB, with 1775
errors ... so ways to go ...
