[kwlug-disc] Volunteer help wanted: save some laptops!

Okay, let's fix some laptops.

Some people want to help fix laptops during Computer Recycling
operating hours (Tuesday-Friday 10am-5pm). Those people can contact
Charles directly: charlesm at theworkingcentre.org (or the address he
uses on this list, I guess.) CC me on the email if you want.

Some people have distractions like employment or schooling which
prevents them from fixing laptops during Computer Recycling hours. Of
this group, a subset would like to fix laptops in the evening on a
weekday and a subset would like to fix laptops on a weekend. To
accomodate these subsets, we are going to experiment with holding
laptop-fixing sessions after hours:

- Saturday, Nov 8, 4pm-8pm or so.
- Monday, Nov 10, 5pm-9pm or so.

Both of these sessions will be held at the SECRET COMPUTER RECYCLING
LAIR at 66 Queen Street South, Kitchener. Getting into the SECRET LAIR
after hours is going to be challenging, so if you would like to
volunteer during one of these sessions please send me an email and I
will send you the SECRET PHONE NUMBER to call and get in. (And for you
Luddites who don't own phones, bring $0.50, because one of the few
remaining pay phones in Kitchener is across the street. Or just make
arrangements with me and we will figure something out.)

There is a subset of you which would like to volunteer to fix laptops,
but for which none of these times work. Let me know this offlist, and
let me know what kinds of days would work better.

If these sessions work well maybe we will make them a regular thing.
If they turn out like all of the other futile and unfun volunteer
obligations I have been taking on, then not so much.

There is also a subset of you who wants to take some laptops to the
SECRET KWARTZLAB LAIR and fix them there. If possible, I recommend
that some of you attend one of the initial sessions to scope out the
situation. If you then want to take some laptops away to fix them, we
can make arrangements.

People associated with Computer Recycling, Kwartzlab, KWLUG, or other
organizations beginning with hard-k sounds are welcome to participate.
You do not need to be a laptop refurbishing expert to participate, but
I am not sure how appropriate these sessions will be for people who
are completely unfamiliar with computers.
