[kwlug-disc] Linux Conf Azure Talk

Cranky's point is well made.

However, I doubt anyone from kwlug would believe anything they say.

And I wouldn't want any 'newbies' (students) to be taken in by the smoke and mirrors and hopes and propaganda.

Certainly I wish we were on the other side of the hill and MS was a well accepted and integrated part of the FOSS world, but there has been too much water under that bridge that never actually reached the other side for me to believe any of it. The very nature of a (sub-element) closed source, for profit proprietary enterprise is diametrically opposed to the FOSS world. (Not that it can't be done, there are organizations out there that develop code to solve internal requirements then freely publish such GPLed code to the world. I just don't believe that MS will ever do so at an XP desktop level [i.e. pre-phone/touch sole interface] - and without such the rest doesn't matter.)

Such a talk makes sense - just anyone attending should go into it eyes wide open.

So, having a prior talk as to what FOSS is, why it matters, and how it's already embedded in your everyday life, may be prudent. (No doubt such is already planned. Just, it's probably important that people attend such before they walk into a MS presentation.

So also important might be having the session following MS be an open town hall like exploration of whatever MS smoke and mirrors just got presented, to help people see clearly through the curtain.

Note though that such session should clearly delineate between the technical merits and the surrounding background. Getting bogged down in 'MS is bad' when you're interested in learning more about the technology, or vice versa, will just be irritating and non-productive to both groups.

Not unique to MS. Same comments would apply to Oracle / java, or EMC / vmware.
