Has anyone on the list tried out a home automation / security system
that uses the ZWave protocol for sensors?

It seems there is a plethora of devices that support that protocol,
and there are Linux devices that can act as controllers.

For example:

It is basically a router with USB and ZWave

On their wiki, they have this, which shows they are running BusyBox

Programming is done via a dialect of Lua with uPNP added (hence Luup).
There is integration with Android and iOS of course.

This is for an older version, but shows it is running OpenWRT
Kamikaze, and programmed in good all shell.
