Agreed. Modems/gateways have died no more or less frequently on cable
than on DSL. If there's a spike of the sort you're talking about, it
will be coming down the electrical (likely), not the twisted pair or
cable - so you're equally at risk either way. Let alone the twisted pair
carries a constant 45V all on its own. I can't even remember the last
modem that died - which means it was on DSL, not cable. Excluding, as
Khalid says, tech / speed upgrades.
Acanac seamlessly switched to two weeks ago now. Free phone (if I
cared), vpn, remote sh, 100GB ftp ... not much to not like. (Except
their forums, that is.)
DSL will just never have the speed cable does. To blame DSL for
anything, regardless of the provider, is just pointless. It's just not
gonna do it ... in this day and age of more and more traffic
consumption, faster and faster computers, and higher and higher
expectations. Merely the amount of refreshes from google or
theweathernetwork is depressing.
Add VoIP or streaming (consuming ~5Mbps by itself, on a max. 5Mbps
technology) ... and you're just beat.
I get the Rogers issues (heck, just got notice they're going to kill my
PVR / basic analog cable, Feb. 17th - only $500 for a new device if I
stay with them to 'fix' what ain't broken) ... but at least I can tweak
their tail by using a reseller instead.
Curious coincidence for that notice on a Monday, having just switched
internet the prior Friday. Zazeen, the only other true local PVR I know
of, becomes an option with basic/analog TV being killed.
