This is not a solution, but it may be relevant. I have found that
PulseAudio does not always expose enough controls to unmute sound. The
easy GUI way to explore this is to install the "qasmixer" package and
look through the controls there. I have sometimes had to poke around
to see whether there were sound cards other than the default. 

There are non-GUI ways to look at the ALSA controls too, but I
generally don't bother.
