One of the most interesting options in that direction: https://ricochet.im/. https://www.imperialviolet.org/2013/11/10/pond.html is also an option. maybe.

Also, about universal p2p systems: that was one of the basic ideas underneath Urbit, which might be a better long term solution if it ever gets off the ground.
