Since they were giving out free (gratis) credit, I spun up a Debian
server on Data Mantle -- easiest Debian install I've ever done. Not
very flexible for partition layout &c., but for a single-purpose
application it's not so bad. No DNS, so I put their IP on a subdomain
with my regular DNS provider. They do give a custom rDNS link, tho.

The cheapest paid option at Data Mantle is about $4/month, better than
shared hosting, but none of the amenities like automatic mail, mailing
lists, file manager, &c (unless you run them on your own VPS).

Just for practice I put up a GNUsocial instance; try it out if you
like: https://gs.sobac.com

- --Bob, who still wants to set up a KWLUG GNUsocial instance if someone
contributes an unused VPS somewhere
