I’m running a private GNU Social server; used to be a status.net server until they merged. Along with it’s RSS feed and a private Prosody server and (eventually) an army of XMPP bots/agents it’s the backbone of my “mental DBus” implementation. It’s good stuff, and best of all, no reliance whatsoever on closed-source or proprietary cloud services.
