You may not want to get too ambitious inventing technology on this just yet.
Calendars was one aspect of Bob's initial request of Mark for a VPS, so
expect something to happen on that this year.
This was expected to be within the context of Nextcloud, so I don't know
that it was specific to Watcamp. I will let Bob make any further comment
wrt his intent, and so on.
Not meaning to put any form of damper on anything here, merely to say
that the VPS and facilities of Nextcloud will be available as a resource
if useful. e.g. I'm guessing you could make a public RSS'able calendar
there. There must be a line between K-W Lug purposes / resources and a
much larger community, but just where that line is isn't clear.
Certainly only a calendar isn't too much, and I've long claimed K-W Lug
is more about technology in/and K-W, and more U than L in Lug.
GNU Social and Nextcloud are up, now, but in no way ready for
production. Nextcloud, in particular, I need to completely re-do,
particularly with accompanying services like XMPP for it to sit with /
leverage. [But perhaps URLs won't change?]
My vision of the VPS is as a K-W Lug collaborative seed pot. Just
exactly what that means isn't entirely apparent to me just yet, but
everywhere you look in Nextcloud its collaborative boundaries seem
pretty far out there. A resource, just like www.kwlug.org and these
mailing lists are resources, anything on https://kwlug.org/community, or
even Andrew's https://gitlab.com/kwlug, for that matter. (wiki, anyone?)
Bob's initial request, which Mark delivered on:

I've been wanting to set up a KWLUG GNUsocial instance. It would only
be one Web-based app, so it wouldn't completely consume a VPS. If
someone is willing to help with the VPS maintenance I'll gladly help
set up a GS instance.
There's a @KWLUG GNUsocial account at http://sn.jonkman.ca/kwlug right
now, but it would carry much more authority if it were actually hosted
on a gs.kwlug.org domain. And while I'm happy to invite other
KWLUGgers to my GS instance I doubt many people will want to be
attached to a domain named "jonkman".
I wouldn't mind setting up a KWLUG Nextcloud instance too. That'll get
us the calendaring service that Drupal is currently lacking.
