The nomachine package did the trick.
It works seamlessly, and performance is very good.

Still working my way through the learning curve (remote machine has
higher resolution than my laptop so things get weird, keyboard and
mouse and when they go there, or stay here, ...etc.)

But overall, that does what I want.

Thanks to all the suggestions from everyone. Andrew wins the
$1,000,000 though ...
