It could do just that, with a comprehensive list of domains to block in
the NXDOMAINfile.list.
And, of course, works for all devices on the LAN if set as primary DNS
on router; even guests with obscure devices would benefit without any
configuration of those devices.

The more comprehensive the block list, the more the benefits. At least
until it blocks something useful by being overly broad.
Balancing act, I suppose.
