This is in interesting exercise, I will try it on a spare laptop with Mint
18.3 Xfce and KDE to see how well they play. as I login with one or the
other. Heck, I might just toss in Mate too.

Encouraging to know that you have had a long run with multiple DEs on
Ubuntu.
