There's a great video from a few years ago of Brian Kernighan
giving a lecture on "successful language design", in which he
spends a good chunk of time explaining why awk (even after about
40 years) is so good for day-to-day one-liners. But it's also an
excellent discussion of the history of the usefulness of certain
programming languages:
