OK, an update ...
I ended up buying a Raspberry Pi 3 ($49 or so from Amazon Canada). It small
footprint, low power consumption, lower cost and availability of GPIO pins
made it win over any Intel/AMD variant.
The project is shaping up nicely, and I have to say I am pretty impressed
with Home Assistant.
There was a bit of reverse engineering involved too ...
It can be used for a variety of things: Home Automation, Internet of
Things, Security, and much more.
So, a talk on Home Assistant is in order. This would be a double slot talk.
