If you are running a Debian derived system, then you can experiment as much
as you want
with DigiKam and any other KDE based app.

$ sudo aptitude install blah
... [pulls in a lot of stuff]

... test it out

$ sudo aptitude purge blah

Everything goes back to how it was before you installed the application.

So, not really a concern, and no need to install a KDE desktop just to test
...

I run a couple of KDE programs on Xubuntu without issues.
