I did this, followed by running both update-grub and update-grub2, and
now I am on the new kernel.

It worked! I am on the -44 kernel now. Thanks for the pointer.

Regarding grub, it is odd that I still have menu.lst (old grub), as well as
grub.cfg (grub-pc). I know menu.lst works, since I edited it to make it
wait for more time for a choice.

Although I only have grub-pc installed (version 2):
