[kwlug-disc] OT: How to sell used server stuff?

We used to have a working relationship with Eco-Tech when the Ontario
Electronic Stewardship (OES) first started up. At that point we were
feeding Eco-Tech all of our ewaste because they were close to us. Before
this we worked with partners in London and other cities. Those partners
always supported us with a small cut of the ewaste profits whereas when we
worked with Eco-Tech we weren't getting any money from them. This wasn't a
huge deal for us at that point because we were happy to support a then new
enterprise (Eco-Tech) in the area.

A little over a year or two after OES came into being they became a bit
less flexible and indicated to us that we had to stop sending eWaste to
Eco-Tech because both our organization and Eco-Tech were classified as
"collectors." The idea is you have collection sites and they're suppose to
feed what's known as a primary processor (end of life, like Greentec, Geep,
etc.). Since Eco-Tech wasn't a primary processor, if we wanted to remain
part of OES we were forbidden from taking eWaste to them. (This despite the
fact we actually had a signed agreement with the president of OES that
allowed that exception because we were a small community processor).

I met with the owner of Eco-Tech a couple of times and tried to explain the
situation, but he wasn't hearing any of it, he was stuck on the fact that
we were "dropping" them as an ewaste downstream. I think he was thinking it
was about money (the fact that we didn't receive any from Eco-Tech),
because he offered to incentivize it, but couldn't quite understand that it
had nothing to do with money and everything to do with OES' rules.
Unfortunately he was very unprofessional. I remember him grumbling that he
was going to take us off their web site (which he did) as a partner and
leaving in a huff.

Over they years we've continued to send people to Eco-Tech when the
situation fits (for example: when people don't fit into the low income
bracket and are looking for a Windows system) but we are a bit soured on
them because of the owner's past behavior.
