I would like to put in a plug for Matrix, which is an open source,
decentralized communications system with end-to-end encryption
available.  (Full disclosure: I work on Matrix for my dayjob.)  Anyone
can host their own server, and there are open source clients available
for Linux, Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and even Ubuntu Touch (though
without end-to-end encryption yet).
